Lip filler is the treatment people most often ask us to talk them out of. Most first-timers want a small, subtle change — and the honest version of that conversation is shorter than most clinics will admit.
The Honest Version
What lip filler can — and can't — change
Lip filler is hyaluronic acid (HA) — a substance the skin produces naturally — placed in specific points on the lips to add subtle volume, refine shape, or improve hydration. It softens, defines, and adds water-bound volume. It doesn't change the proportions of your face or transform how you look.
For first-timers, we typically use small volumes (often less than half a ml at the first appointment, sometimes a full ml for clients with naturally thinner lips who want a clear shape change). The tissue settles over about 2 weeks. We book a follow-up at the two-week mark to look at the result together — that's when we'd discuss adding more, if that's what you wanted.
The result we're aiming for is the absence of an obvious change. Lips that look hydrated and balanced — not bigger, not different, just better-rested.

The points that come up in nearly every first-time lip filler consultation. Worth thinking through before you book.

Less is more — start small
First-time lip filler should be conservative. We typically use less than 1ml on first appointments — often under half a ml. The tissue settles over 2 weeks, and we'd rather see how your lips respond before adding more.

Shape vs volume — the conversation we'll have
Most first-timers describe wanting “more volume”, but what they actually want is often a small definition change — a sharper Cupid's bow, slightly more visible vermilion border, or a subtle correction to natural asymmetry. The consultation untangles which you actually want.

Two-week review, your call from there
We book a brief two-week follow-up so you can see how the filler has settled. From there, you decide whether to add more, leave it, or stop. There's no obligation either way.
When We'd Say No
Who lip filler isn't right for
Lip filler isn't suitable for everyone. We'll decline if any of the following applies:
- You're pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You have an active cold sore at or near the lip line.
- You have a known allergy to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine.
- You're under 18.
- Your lips are already at a volume where adding more would affect safety, shape, or proportion.
- I get a sense the request isn't coming from a settled place. We'll talk that through gently rather than just refuse.

Aftercare
The first 14 days
Most clients leave with mild swelling that peaks at around 24 hours and resolves over the following 3 to 7 days. Small bruises are possible at injection sites and usually fade within a week.
For the first 24 hours, avoid strenuous exercise, very hot drinks, alcohol, and significant lip pressure (no straws or lipstick application that requires firm pressing). Most other normal activity is fine.
The tissue settles by around day 14. We book a brief two-week review so we can look at the result together before deciding whether to add more or leave it.

It depends on the volume used and how it's placed. The honest answer: lip filler can be invisible-natural or obviously-done — and the difference is dose. We aim for the former, every time. Your lips should look like yours, on a slightly fresher day.
Not if we calibrate the dose. The look you may have seen — overfilled, distorted, the upper lip rolling out — comes from too much volume placed too quickly. We start small (typically less than 1ml for first-timers) and build at a follow-up if you want more.
Most people describe it as briefly uncomfortable rather than painful. We use a topical anaesthetic before treatment, and the filler itself contains a numbing agent. Most first-timers describe the sensation as a brief sting at each injection point.
