Acne scars often improve gradually over a course of microneedling — but the result depends on the scar type, your skin, and time. We'll tell you honestly whether you're a good candidate.

If you've had acne for years and the active stuff is mostly under control, the scars are often what's left to deal with. Microneedling can help — for some scar types more than others. Below is what we'd talk through if you came in asking about it.
Not all acne marks are the same — and that matters because they don't all respond the same way to treatment.
The first thing we do at a consultation is identify which kinds you're actually dealing with — most people have a mix. That tells us what microneedling may genuinely help with, and what won't respond to it.
Honest expectations are the most important part of any acne-scar consultation. Here's how different scar types tend to respond to a course of microneedling.
These tend to respond best to a course of microneedling. The treatment encourages the skin to remodel collagen across the scar floor, gradually softening the indentation. Realistic outcome: noticeable improvement, not removal.
Microneedling alone is partial here. These scars are narrow and deep, and they tend to need techniques like TCA cross or punch excision — which we don't offer at this clinic. If your scarring is predominantly ice-pick, we'll tell you so and discuss alternatives.
Pink or brown marks left over after acne are a different concern from textural scarring. Microneedling may help indirectly by improving overall skin quality, but for pigmentation specifically, chemical peels or targeted skincare are usually more efficient. We'll explain the trade-offs.
Microneedling works by creating tiny channels in the skin that trigger the body's natural collagen-remodelling response. That response is gradual — collagen continues to form and reorganise for weeks after each session.
Three to six sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, gives the skin time to remodel between visits while building cumulative improvement. A single session may freshen the skin a little but it's rarely enough to meaningfully shift scarring.
We'll review your progress at the end of the planned course. If further sessions are likely to add value, we'll say so. If you've reached the result that microneedling can offer for your situation, we'll say that too.
Microneedling addresses texture; chemical peels can address pigmentation and surface tone. For some patients — especially those with a mix of textural scarring and post-acne pigmentation — combining the two over the same overall programme can give a better result than either alone.
We don't use combination as a default. We use it where the picture genuinely calls for it. If we think a peel alongside microneedling would meaningfully improve your outcome, we'll explain why. Read more about chemical skin peels.
There are situations where we'd pause or decline microneedling for acne scarring. We'll go through these in detail at consultation — and we may ask you to speak to your GP first if anything is unclear.
Treatment is paused while the skin is actively inflamed. We'll wait until breakouts have settled before starting a course — it's better for healing and for the result.
Most current guidance suggests a 6–12 month wait after your last dose before microneedling. Bring details of your treatment timeline to the consultation and please speak to your prescriber if you're unsure.
Darker skin tones carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. We'll discuss patch-testing, conservative protocols, and whether an alternative treatment may suit you better.
Most people experience noticeable redness for 24 to 48 hours, sometimes longer for those with reactive skin. The face often feels warm and slightly tight in the first day, easing steadily.
We'll ask you to avoid active skincare ingredients (retinoids, exfoliating acids) for several days, to keep the skin barrier supported, and to use SPF carefully. Gentle cleanser, simple hydrator, and good sleep are the protocol for the first week.
Light makeup can usually be applied 24 hours after the appointment. Plan visible-redness time around your week if you have an event. We'll give you the full aftercare leaflet at your appointment.
Acne-scar work is typically a course of 3 to 6 sessions, spaced around 4 to 6 weeks apart. The right number depends on the type and depth of your scars and how your skin responds along the way. We'd rather under-promise and review the result session by session than commit you to a fixed number on day one.
Honestly, no — and any clinic telling you that should be approached with caution. Microneedling may soften the appearance of certain scars over a course, particularly rolling and shallow boxcar scars. Deep ice-pick scars often respond only partially. The realistic goal is a noticeable improvement, not a removal.
Topical numbing cream is applied before treatment, and most clients describe the sensation as a mild prickling once the area is numbed. The face usually feels warm and slightly sensitive afterwards — similar to mild sunburn — for the first 24 hours.
Most people experience visible redness for 24 to 48 hours, sometimes a little longer. Light makeup can usually be applied 24 hours after the appointment. We'll give you full aftercare guidance, including which products to pause for the first few days.
Some early changes in skin texture may be visible within a couple of weeks of the first session, but the meaningful change for scarring builds over the full course as new collagen forms. We typically book a review at the end of the planned course to assess progress and decide whether further sessions add value.
Microneedling alone is rarely the right primary tool for ice-pick scars — they're narrow and very deep, and they tend to need techniques like TCA cross or punch excision, which I don't offer at this clinic. If your scarring is mostly ice-pick, I'll tell you so honestly and may suggest a referral elsewhere rather than start a course that's unlikely to give you the result you want.
Microneedling can be performed on a range of skin tones, but darker skin types (Fitzpatrick IV–VI) carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — the darkening of treated areas as they heal. We'd talk this through carefully in the consultation, including patch-testing where appropriate, and we may recommend a more conservative protocol or alternative treatment if the risk profile isn't right for you.
If you've recently taken isotretinoin (Roaccutane), most current guidance recommends waiting at least 6 to 12 months from your last dose before having microneedling, because the skin's healing response is altered for some time after treatment. I'd ask you to confirm the gap with your prescriber and we'd discuss it before booking — please speak to your GP or specialist if you're unsure.
Sometimes, yes — a chemical peel earlier in the same week can complement microneedling, especially where pigmentation as well as texture is part of the picture. We'd plan the sequence carefully to avoid over-treating the skin. The decision depends on your scar type and skin type, and we'd talk it through in your consultation.
Book a consultation and we'll talk through what's realistic for your scarring — including whether microneedling, a combination programme, or something else is the right call.
